Ok... It''s a bit sad but... You meet a girl a week after you book your ticket (I have spent half a year in Poland and met her there). Furthermore, three days before you're leaving on holiday, you hear that your contract won't be renewed. And now you're wondering why you wanted to go to the other side of the world in the first place but here's my story.
So Indonesia... Other than the fact that it's the biggest Muslim country in the world, a former dutch colony, the fact that it has more Islands than you can shake a stick at and a lot of volcanoes, it's a country I know very little about... Sure, it's not exclusively muslim. Bali is mostly Hindu for example but still... I'm curious about the belt of emerald as it's sometimes called in Holland. The basic idea is to go from Jakarta to Bali but that's also about the only plan I have... There are a few volcanoes in between, a city or two and probably a beach somewhere but other than that, I'm blowin' with the wind.
First things first though... Getting there is a rather long process of waiting and boredom, flying (basically the same as waiting but while on the move), waiting again in Dubai and flying again (see earlier remark). Flying with Emirates' daily flight to Dubai, the first leg was uneventful. Other than the fact that it took place inside a flying appartment building aka one of their A380's which was a novelty (with a lot more leg-room than KLM). The flight was rather dull which some would consider a good thing though.
Dubai's airport is a tasteless, big, gaudy affair with a lot of luxury shops and matching prices. There's the odd Porche placed at strategic intervals so the Philippino, Indian and Sri-lankan staff who seem to run most of the shops here know what they can never buy. Also, it being mid-december, there's christmas music playing everywhere (remember, Dubai is a muslim state). Other than that, it's a long wait with drinking overpriced beers, eating overpriced food and waiting it out until my flight leaves for Jakarta at 4:40 local time.
